The second-generation Apple Pencil, released in 2018, built upon the success of its predecessor and introduced several key improvements. This stylus was designed exclusively for use with the latest iPad models at the time, offering enhanced features and usability.
The most significant upgrade was the introduction of wireless charging and magnetic attachment. The second-generation Apple Pencil could be magnetically attached to the side of the iPad for easy storage and charging, eliminating the need to plug it into the lightning port as in the first-generation Apple Pencil. This convenience greatly improved its usability.
The stylus retained advanced pressure sensitivity, tilt recognition, and virtually no latency, making it a powerful tool for artists and note-takers. It also featured a double-tap gesture for customizable functions within supported apps, providing quick access to various tools, such as to switch colors or to an eraser. The shape and dimensions of the pencil have been updated to have a flat face improving how it feels in the hand and shrinking its length from 176mm to 166mm.
